Hit the Books! Simply Betty Challenges

I cannot believe it is almost time for Phoenix to go back to school. As much  as I love his school, I hate the idea that he will be going 4 days a week! Yeah, it’s only for a couple of hours each day…but still. I want my boy home with me!!! But, it will get him prepped for next year (AACK! Kindergarten!), which is important. And, it will also give me some Girl Time with Rhiannon.

So today there is a new challenge over at the Simply Betty Challenge Blog. It’s to “hit the books! Anything fit for school, a notebook, a pencil holder, a teacher treat box…anything but a card.”

As I mentioned, Phoenix hasn’t started school yet, but I do view our home as a classroom as well. He is always learning things here, every single day. For instance, he has learned how to read. At 4 1/2! He started recognizing some words here and there in the Spring. And he was always good at memorizing books. But then he started asking questions…like “what does this say,” or “what sound do these letters make?” He stopped reading from memory and started to sound things out. So I gave him a little test on July 18th…because I just wasn’t sure if he was reading or not. I pulled out Frog and Toad (one of my childhood faves), a book we have never read to him. And by golly…he started to READ! There were a couple of words here and there that he didn’t get, but he was able to sound out some of them, and I helped with the rest. My boy was reading! And he hasn’t stopped. Everywhere we go, he reads signs, packages…you name it. I couldn’t be prouder. So with all of that being said, here is my project. I made a layout of my boy. Reading at home…in his “other” school.

He often has a pile bigger than this next to him. He could read for hours. It’s really wonderful! You will notice that I have Pile of Books Miller on the right. Isn’t he just perfect for this layout? I probably should have had Phoenix change his shirt to better coordinate with the way I colored Miller…

I colored Miller with my watercolor markers (Copics for skin). I really love this image.

There’s my boy! I used a plethora of paper scraps and a few stickers for this page. I stamped the title with a Just Rite alpha stamp in the banner of the plane. You can click on any of my photos to see them bigger.

I hope you will join the rest of the SBS Scrap Team for this challenge! I’d love to see your creations! Bonus points if you use this Back to Skool collection from Simply Betty. :)

A huge thank you to all of you that stopped by and left me some love for my tutorial yesterday. I was super nervous about it, and you all made me feel like I did a good job. Thank you so much! Have an inspiring day!!!

February Smeared & Smudged Sketch Challenge

The new Smeared & Smudged challenges are up and ready for you to participate in! I got instantly inspired by Kelli’s card sketch for the month, as I have been working with different ideas for my next “Tarot Card.” Haha! That’s actually pretty funny! If you’ve been checking in over the past couple of weeks, you may have seen my Misty Benson Tarot Set 1 ( Smeared Ink ) cards. I’ve used The World and The Fool so far. Today, I bring you Death. Don’t worry…it’s actually a joyful image…one that I intend to use a lot! First, here’s the sketch. I flipped it and changed the ribbon and embellishment a bit. Can I just start off by saying that it is quite nerve wracking to slice your image??? I have done it a few times in the past, but I always get butterflies when I attempt it again. I colored the image and the card itself using nothing but Distress Inks and my Cut-n-Dry Nibs. My skull button at the top has been colored with Alcohol Inks.   The colors look a little off to m

Christmas in July with Imagine Crafts & Stencil Girl!

Hello! Have you heard? The Imagine AIRs have been hopping with Stencil Girl! If you have been here before, you know I loooove me some stencils, so this collaboration was very exciting for me! The teams are hopping for 3 consecutive Saturdays, and this is week 2. I have the entire list of hop links at the bottom of the post. Be sure you don't miss anyone! I decided to to create an extra large gift tag with my new stencils. Using red cardstock, I taped down the Journal Texture #8 Stencil  and inked it up with Golden Glitz Delicata ink . I promise you, this is the BEST gold ink you will ever use! The Journal stamp only has 2 diamonds on it (it's a 4x4" stencil), so after I inked up the first pair, I moved over the stencil, lined it up, and inked again. Next I wanted to do something textural with the Urban Insiders Star . So I took some evergreen cardstock, taped down the star, and slathered on some yummy Iridescent Green Creative Medium . After the medium dried, I ga
